Missions to Asteroids and small Bodies

ORB - Orbital mechanics
The year 2018 was exceptional for asteroids exploration with two sample return missions reaching their target: in July 2018, Hayabusa2 (JAXA) reached the asteroid Ryugu. Hayabusa2 released three JAXA technological demonstrators and MASCOT, a lander developed and operated by CNES/DLR. The spacecraft also collected surface material twice and performed a crater-creating experiment… OSIRIS-REX arrived at asteroid Bennu in December 2018 and it should soon start retrieving samples of material. Years ...

User feedback in machine learning

OPS - Operations and Exploitations of Space Missions
USER FEEDBACK IN MACHINE LEARNING / USER-IN-THE-LOOP IN MACHINE LEARNING: Feasible or not ? CNES Experts Communities (COMET) OPS (Operations and Exploitations of Space Missions), SIL (Computer System Architecture and Software Engineering) and ORB (Orbital mechanics) organize a workshop on Machine Learning / deep learning techniques and more specifically around the problem of user feedback in these algorithms. By user feedback it is meant the ability for the user, based on his ...

Recent Advances in the Three-Body Problem

ORB - Orbital mechanics
A growing interest of the space scientific community for trajectories towards, around and from Lagrangian points has been registered in recent years. In particular, the three-body problem is one of the most studied models not only in celestial mechanics, but also in mathematics. For the early first solar system exploration missions (like Voyager), a patched conics model was satisfactory to compute the trajectory. As interplanetary missions became more demanding (as ...

Low-Cost Launcher Services and their Impact

ORB - Orbital mechanics
With the emergence of new businesses in the space market, historic launch service providers and newcomers are proposing cheaper launch services through low-cost launchers or reusable ones. In order to introduce these new actors of the launcher sector,  the COMET-ORB is organizing a seminar on Low-Cost Launcher Services and their Impact. This seminar is an opportunity to discover some of the new launchers that will soon come to fly, their ...

Trajectoires faible énergie et propulsion électrique

ORB - Orbital mechanics
This main purpose of this seminar was to make experts in space guidance and electric propulsion exchange on diverse propulsion technologies and on the compliance of these technologies with future missions. But it was also a time to discuss the effects of these technologies on guidance methods. As electric propulsion reaches maturity, it allows studies about new missions in which guidance algorithms have been adapted or renewed. The aim of the seminar ...
